DOVERMUN 2021 Day 1

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

DOVERMUN 2021 Day 1

February 19th, 2021 marks the beginning of the first ever DOVERMUN Conference. The Executive Committee were honoured to welcome delegates and chairs from schools across Singapore, and began the day with an uplifting Opening Ceremony.

This was followed by diplomatic and thoughtful opening speeches performed by each delegate, which led to fruitful lobbying and merging sessions. Delegates passionately gave speeches, raised amendments and declared alliances as they began debating the detailed and exceptional resolutions submitted by their fellow delegates.

We spoke with the Head Chair of ECOSOC, Ananya Nayak, about her experience with DOVERMUN so far. She's most enjoyed the 'exciting' debate that took place in her committee. ECOSOC delegates have been unafraid to "argue unique and sometimes funny points of view," even mentioning "Dunkin' Donuts" to get their amendment passed. The opportunity to be involved in an inaugural conference where all committees are "multi level and for different experiences" appealed to Ananya and made her want to be a part of DOVERMUN. She looks forward to Day 2, where ECOSOC will be discussing one of their "more controversial resolutions, headed by our most controversial countries."

Renee Jaiswal, the Head of Legal also shared a similar anticipation for the debate that will be taking place on Day 2. The diplomacy of Legal delegates, support from the Secretariat and the "detail that has gone into [the conference]" has all made this a memorable experience for her. As a member of our UWC community, she is thrilled to "spend my last THIMUN conference at the first DOVERMUN!"

Our delegates, including China in the Human Rights Council embodied by Ivette Chiew, have enjoyed the challenge of representing important and controversial countries. This conference will certainly be a memorable experience for Ivette, especially when her ally, the delegate of DPRK, "stepped in to help defend China's concentration camps." DOVERMUN's topics that are "super fresh and relevant and happening right now" is what Ivette believes differentiates this conference from others she has attended. She looks forward to taking part again next year, and is excited for the "new and fresh perspectives" on HRC's resolutions during Day 2!

DOVERMUN 2021 Day 1 elapsed with delegates, chairs and the executive committee alike elated at the success of the preliminary debates. The prospects of the rewarding discussions and innovative solutions to be presented on the second, and final day of DOVERMUN has left everyone in high spirits!
